L-Methionine

(2S)-2-amino-4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoic acid

L-Methionine is the free-form of the sulfur-containing essential amino acid, chemically (2S)-2-amino-4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoic acid (CAS 63-68-3, C5H11NO2S, MW 149.21). It is the single L-enantiomer, distinct from the racemic DL-methionine used chiefly in animal nutrition, and carries a thioether side chain that accounts for its sulfur content. It is produced by fermentation and enzymatic conversion and supplied as a crystalline powder standardized to a typical assay of at least 98.5%. We manufacture it in powder, capsule and tablet formats.
