Alpha-Carotene

(6'R)-beta,epsilon-carotene

Alpha-Carotene is the provitamin-A carotene (6'R)-beta,epsilon-carotene (CAS 7488-99-5; C40H56, molecular weight 536.87), an isomer of beta-carotene differing in that one terminal ring is an epsilon (alpha-ionone) ring rather than a beta ring. It is concentrated from carrot (Daucus carota) or palm (Elaeis) oil, commonly as part of a mixed-carotene concentrate, and standardised to a stated carotene percentage. It is an orange lipophilic pigment supplied as an oil suspension or beadlet. We manufacture it in softgels, capsules and powders.
