Croscarmellose Sodium is an internally cross-linked sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CAS 74811-65-7), designated E468 and used as a tablet and capsule super-disintegrant, typically at 2 to 5%. The cross-linked structure is insoluble but swells rapidly on contact with water, generating the wicking and swelling force that breaks a dosage form apart for release. As a cross-linked modified polymer it is specified by grade rather than a single molecular formula or weight. It is supplied as a white to off-white fibrous powder and manufactured into tablets and capsules.
