Hypromellose (HPMC)

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Hypromellose, or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (CAS 9004-65-3), is a non-ionic cellulose ether designated E464 and used for vegetarian and vegan two-piece capsule shells, aqueous film coatings, binders and controlled-release matrices. It is made by etherifying plant cellulose with methyl and hydroxypropyl groups, and is offered in a range of viscosity and substitution grades for different functions, so it is specified by grade rather than a single molecular formula or weight. It is supplied as a white to off-white powder or granule and manufactured into capsules and tablets.
