Microcrystalline Cellulose (DC Grades)

Microcrystalline cellulose

Microcrystalline Cellulose is purified, partially depolymerised cellulose (CAS 9004-34-6, empirical formula (C6H10O5)n), designated E460(i) and the workhorse diluent and dry binder for tablets and capsules. It is produced by acid hydrolysis of plant cellulose, commonly from wood pulp, to remove amorphous regions, then dried; it is offered in several particle-size and moisture grades for direct compression or wet granulation. Being a polymer it is characterised by grade rather than a single molecular weight. It is supplied as a white free-flowing powder and manufactured into tablets, capsules and powders.
