Sodium Starch Glycolate is the sodium salt of a cross-linked carboxymethyl ether of starch (CAS 9063-38-1), used as a tablet and capsule super-disintegrant, typically at 2 to 8%. It takes up water very rapidly and swells to many times its volume, driving fast disintegration, and is a common alternative to croscarmellose sodium. It is produced from plant starch, usually potato or maize, and as a modified polymer is specified by grade rather than a single molecular formula or weight. It is supplied as a white free-flowing powder and manufactured into tablets and capsules.
