Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (Thioctic Acid)

(±)-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoic acid

Alpha-lipoic acid, also called thioctic acid, is a cyclic disulfide organosulfur compound (CAS 1077-28-7; C8H14O2S2, MW 206.33) supplied here as the (±) racemate, a 1:1 mixture of the R- and S-enantiomers. It is manufactured by chemical synthesis and isolated as a crystalline, HPLC-assayed powder. Unlike the enantiopure R-form, this grade carries both mirror-image configurations in equal proportion, and unlike sodium R-lipoate it is the protonated free carboxylic acid rather than a salt. Its intact 1,2-dithiolane ring marks it as the oxidized form, in contrast to the ring-opened dihydrolipoic acid. We manufacture it in capsules, tablets and powders.
