Betaine Hydrochloride (Betaine HCl)

carboxymethyl(trimethyl)azanium chloride

Betaine hydrochloride (Betaine HCl) is the 1:1 hydrochloride salt of betaine (CAS 590-46-5; C5H12ClNO2, MW 153.61). It is produced synthetically and supplied at an assay typically of at least 98%. Unlike the free anhydrous zwitterion, the added hydrochloride counter-ion makes it a water-soluble crystalline powder that is acidic in solution, and that counter-ion mass lowers the betaine load per gram relative to betaine anhydrous while keeping it above the larger citrate salt. It is manufactured into capsules, tablets and powder blends.
