Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

(3R)-3-acetyloxy-4-(trimethylazaniumyl)butanoate

Acetyl-L-carnitine, or ALCAR (CAS 3040-38-8), is the O-acetyl ester of L-carnitine, formula C9H17NO4 and molecular weight 203.24. It is manufactured synthetically by acetylation of L-carnitine and supplied as the zwitterionic inner-salt (free-base) form rather than as a mineral-acid salt. Chemically it differs from the plain L-carnitine base by the acetyl group on the hydroxyl position, and from the tartrate and fumarate grades in being an ester rather than a carboxylic-acid salt. The material is a zwitterionic powder that we manufacture into capsules, tablets and powders.
