R-Alpha-lipoic acid (R-ALA) is the single, naturally-configured R-enantiomer of the cyclic disulfide organosulfur compound (CAS 1200-22-2; C8H14O2S2, MW 206.33). It is produced synthetically and resolved to a chiral-HPLC enantiomeric-purity specification, and is commonly oil-stabilized because the enantiopure free acid is lower-melting and less thermally stable than the racemic crystalline solid. It shares the free-acid carboxyl and the intact oxidized dithiolane ring of the racemate but contains only the R-configuration rather than the 1:1 R/S mixture, and it is neither salified like sodium R-lipoate nor ring-opened like dihydrolipoic acid. We manufacture it in capsules, softgels and powders.
