meso-Zeaxanthin is the (3R,3'S) meso stereoisomer of the xanthophyll carotenoid beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol (CAS 31272-50-1; C40H56O2, MW 568.87), distinguished from the (3R,3'R) marigold and synthetic grades solely by the configuration at one of the two chiral centres. It is prepared by alkaline isomerization of marigold-derived (Tagetes erecta) lutein, which rearranges the ring double bond to yield the meso diol. Like the other free grades it is an unesterified diol rather than the dipalmitate diester, and it is supplied as a free-form beadlet or oil suspension standardized to a stated total meso-zeaxanthin percent. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules, tablets, powders and gummies.
