L-Cysteine

L-Cysteine (base)

(2R)-2-amino-3-sulfanylpropanoic acid

L-Cysteine base is the free-base form of the sulfur-containing amino acid, chemically (2R)-2-amino-3-sulfanylpropanoic acid (CAS 52-90-4, C3H7NO2S, MW 121.16), carrying a reactive thiol side chain and, by convention, the R configuration. This grade is produced by microbial fermentation, the vegan route, rather than by hydrolysis of keratin from hair or feathers. It is supplied as a crystalline powder standardized to a typical assay of at least 98.5%, and as the free base it carries no chloride counter-ion, unlike the hydrochloride grade. We manufacture it in powder, capsule and tablet formats.
