Ellagic Acid

2,3,7,8-tetrahydroxychromeno[5,4,3-cde]chromene-5,10-dione

Ellagic Acid is the dilactone phenolic 2,3,7,8-tetrahydroxychromeno[5,4,3-cde]chromene-5,10-dione (CAS 476-66-4; C14H6O8, molecular weight 302.19), the dimeric derivative of gallic acid formed on hydrolysis of ellagitannins. It is obtained from pomegranate (Punica granatum) and berries and standardised by HPLC. It is a small, defined molecule, distinct from the large pomegranate ellagitannins (punicalagins) that release it on hydrolysis. It is supplied as an off-white to tan powder. We manufacture it in capsules, tablets and powders.
