Sorbitol Liquid 70% Solution is D-sorbitol (D-glucitol) supplied as an approximately 70% w/w aqueous syrup, the same polyol as the crystalline grade (CAS 50-70-4, EC 200-061-5, formula C6H14O6, molecular weight 182.17 for the sorbitol solute). The sorbitol is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of plant-derived glucose and then held in water as a crystallising solution to USP/Ph.Eur. grade rather than being dried to a solid. Compared with the crystalline powder, this form is a viscous liquid that already carries roughly 30% water, so it is pourable and acts as a humectant in wet processing instead of as a compressible powder. It is supplied as a clear viscous solution and manufactured into the liquid and gummy dosage formats, where it serves as a humectant, bulking agent and sweetener.
