L-Cystine

(2R,2'R)-3,3'-disulfanediylbis(2-aminopropanoic acid)

L-Cystine is the oxidized dimer of L-cysteine, two cysteine molecules joined by a disulfide bond, chemically (2R,2'R)-3,3'-disulfanediylbis(2-aminopropanoic acid) (CAS 56-89-3, C6H12N2O4S2, MW 240.30). As a distinct dimeric compound rather than a salt of cysteine, it has roughly double the molecular weight and two sulfur atoms, and it is markedly less water-soluble than cysteine. This grade is fermentation-derived, the vegan route, rather than keratin-hydrolysed, and supplied as a crystalline powder standardized to a typical assay of at least 98.5%. We manufacture it in powder, capsule and tablet formats.
