Mannitol (Powder)

D-Mannitol

Mannitol (Powder) is D-mannitol (CAS 69-65-8, C6H14O6, MW 182.17), a six-carbon sugar alcohol designated E421, with about 50 to 60% of the sweetness of sucrose and a pronounced negative heat of solution that gives a cooling mouthfeel. It is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of plant-derived glucose and fructose syrups, then crystallised to a USP/Ph.Eur./FCC grade of at least 98%. Unlike its isomer sorbitol it is essentially non-hygroscopic, which suits moisture-sensitive chewable and lozenge bases. It is supplied as a free-flowing white crystalline powder and manufactured into powders, tablets and capsules.
