Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium hydrogen carbonate

Sodium bicarbonate is the monosodium salt of carbonic acid, sodium hydrogen carbonate (CAS 144-55-8; NaHCO3, MW 84.01), familiar as baking soda. It carries about 27% elemental sodium and, on contact with acid, releases carbon dioxide, which is why it is specified as the gas-generating component of effervescent systems as well as a buffering and electrolyte salt. It is mildly alkaline and water-soluble, distinct from the near-neutral chloride and citrate. We supply it as a white crystalline powder for tablets, capsules and powders.
