Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin (marigold, natural)

(3R,3'R)-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol

Marigold zeaxanthin is the xanthophyll carotenoid (3R,3'R)-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol (CAS 144-68-3, EC 205-636-4; C40H56O2, MW 568.87), supplied as the free, non-esterified diol. It is obtained by extracting the oleoresin of marigold (Tagetes erecta) petals and saponifying the naturally occurring esters to liberate crystalline free zeaxanthin. Unlike the family's dipalmitate grade, both hydroxyl groups are unacylated, giving a lower molecular weight and a correspondingly higher carotenoid load per unit mass, and it shares the (3R,3'R) configuration of the synthetic grade rather than the (3R,3'S) meso stereoisomer. It is delivered as a cold-water-dispersible beadlet or an oil suspension standardized to a stated total zeaxanthin percent. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules, tablets, powders and gummies.
