Zeaxanthin dipalmitate, also known as physalien, is the (3R,3'R)-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diyl dihexadecanoate diester of zeaxanthin (CAS 144-67-2, EC 205-635-9; C72H116O4, MW 1045.7), in which both hydroxyl groups of the carotenoid are acylated with palmitic (hexadecanoic) acid. It is the form in which zeaxanthin naturally accumulates in goji (Lycium barbarum) berries and is supplied as a goji-derived oleoresin or oil suspension, typically expressed as zeaxanthin equivalents after saponification. Because two long-chain fatty acids roughly double the molecular weight relative to the free diol grades, the diester is more lipophilic and carries a lower zeaxanthin content per unit mass than the unesterified (3R,3'R) and meso forms. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules, powders and liquids.
