L-Ornithine

L-Ornithine (base)

(2S)-2,5-diaminopentanoic acid

L-Ornithine base is the free-base form of the non-proteinogenic amino acid, chemically (2S)-2,5-diaminopentanoic acid (CAS 70-26-8, C5H12N2O2, MW 132.16), a urea-cycle intermediate closely related to L-arginine. As the unsalted base it carries no counter-ion, giving the highest ornithine content per gram of the family, in contrast to the hydrochloride, aspartate and ketoglutarate salts. It is produced by microbial fermentation and supplied as a crystalline powder standardized to a typical assay of at least 98.5%. We manufacture it in powder, capsule and tablet formats.
