L-Selenomethionine

L-Selenomethionine (CAS 3211-76-5, C5H11NO2Se, MW 196.12) is the organic seleno-amino acid in which a selenium atom replaces the sulfur of L-methionine, supplied as the single defined L-isomer. It is produced by chemical synthesis to give one chemically defined compound rather than a biological matrix, and carries roughly 40% selenium by weight. Unlike the inorganic sodium selenite and sodium selenate salts, the selenium here is covalently bound within an amino acid backbone rather than present as an oxidized +4 or +6 anion, and unlike selenium-enriched yeast it is an isolated molecule rather than selenium distributed through yeast protein. We supply it as a crystalline powder for capsules, tablets, softgels and powder blends.
