Fermentative Lycopene is the carotenoid all-trans-lycopene (psi,psi-carotene; CAS 502-65-8, C40H56) produced by fermentation of the fungus Blakeslea trispora, structurally identical to the tomato and synthetic grades. It is the same acyclic, oil-soluble red carotenoid, its polyene chain bearing no terminal ionone rings. This grade is recovered from the fermentation biomass and formulated as a 5-20% sunflower-oil suspension with added tocopherol, standardized to at least 90% all-trans lycopene, a higher all-trans assay than the tomato oleoresin. Unlike the plant-extracted oleoresin and the chemically synthesized concentrate, it is a microbial fermentation product manufactured without tomato feedstock or chemical assembly. We manufacture it in softgels, capsules, tablets and powders.
