Vitamin B6

Pyridoxine

4,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylpyridin-3-ol

Pyridoxine (CAS 65-23-6) is the free-base alcohol vitamer of vitamin B6, one of the three natural B6 vitamers, with the formula C8H11NO3 and a molecular weight of 169.18. It is made by chemical synthesis and supplied to food and pharmaceutical grade as the unsalted base, a less common raw material than the corresponding hydrochloride salt. Because it carries no hydrogen chloride its molecular weight is lower than that of pyridoxine hydrochloride (205.64), so a given mass contains a higher proportion of the pyridoxine moiety; it shares the same bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridinol backbone but lacks the phosphate group of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate and the aminomethyl group of pyridoxamine. It is offered as a crystalline powder and manufactured into powders, capsules and tablets.
