Synthetic Lycopene is the carotenoid all-trans-lycopene (psi,psi-carotene; CAS 502-65-8, C40H56) built by chemical synthesis, molecularly identical to the tomato-derived pigment. Like the other members of the family it is an acyclic, oil-soluble red carotenoid whose polyene chain lacks the terminal rings of the cyclic carotenes. Rather than being extracted from plant biomass or produced by fungal fermentation, it is assembled chemically and then formulated as an oil suspension or beadlet standardized to approximately 5-20% all-trans lycopene. Compared with the tomato oleoresin it is a defined concentrate free of the accompanying tomato matrix, and it reaches a higher stated all-trans assay than the natural oleoresin grade. We manufacture it in softgels, capsules, tablets and powders.
