Crocin

Crocetin

8,8'-diapo-psi,psi-carotenedioic acid (crocetin)

Crocetin is the aglycone of crocin, the carotenoid dicarboxylic acid 8,8'-diapo-psi,psi-carotenedioic acid (CAS 27876-94-4; C20H24O4, molecular weight 328.40). It is obtained by hydrolysing the gentiobiose sugars from crocin to leave the free diacid, and is supplied as an orange-red HPLC-assayed powder. Carrying no sugar units, it has a far lower molecular weight than crocin and is lipophilic rather than water-soluble, the opposite solubility character to the parent glycoside. We manufacture it in capsules, softgels and powders.
