Dextrose Monohydrate is D-glucose crystallised with one molecule of water (CAS 5996-10-1, C6H12O6.H2O, MW 198.17), the nutritive monosaccharide with roughly 70 to 75% of the sweetness of sucrose. It is produced by complete hydrolysis of plant starch, commonly corn, followed by crystallisation. As a single sugar unit it is distinct from the glucose polymer maltodextrin, and the monohydrate crystal habit aids flow and direct compression. It is supplied as a white crystalline powder and manufactured into powders, tablets and capsules.
