Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)

D-Pantothenic Acid

D-pantothenic acid; (R)-3-(2,4-dihydroxy-3,3-dimethylbutanamido)propanoic acid

D-pantothenic acid (CAS 79-83-4) is the free-acid form of vitamin B5, chemically (R)-3-(2,4-dihydroxy-3,3-dimethylbutanamido)propanoic acid, with the molecular formula C9H17NO5 and a molecular weight of 219.24. It is produced by chemical synthesis as the active D-enantiomer and is the parent vitamer from which the calcium and sodium salts and the alcohol panthenol are derived. Carrying no counter-ion, it holds the highest pantothenic-acid content per gram of the family, but as a hygroscopic viscous oil or gel it is less convenient to handle than the crystalline calcium salt, which is why it is usually supplied as calcium pantothenate. We manufacture it in liquid, capsule and powder formats.
