Fumaric Acid

trans-Butenedioic acid (fumaric acid)

Fumaric Acid is trans-butenedioic acid (CAS 110-17-8, C4H4O4, MW 116.07), an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid designated E297 and used as an acidulant. It is produced synthetically, commonly by catalytic isomerisation of maleic acid, and purified to an FCC grade of at least 99.5%. Its very low hygroscopicity and strong acid strength per unit weight make it well suited to dry blends and long-shelf-life powders where moisture pick-up must be minimised. It is supplied as a white crystalline powder and manufactured into powders and tablets.
