Ferric ammonium citrate is a highly water-soluble complex of ferric iron, citric acid and ammonia (CAS 1185-57-5) rather than a single defined salt, so it has no fixed molecular formula or molecular weight and is standardised to its stated elemental iron content. It is supplied in a brown grade carrying roughly 16 to 18.5% iron and a green grade carrying about 14.5 to 16% iron, the colours reflecting different iron-to-citrate-to-ammonia proportions. Its high solubility sets it apart from the insoluble ferric phosphate and pyrophosphate fortificants. It is a hygroscopic granular powder manufactured into powders, liquids and tablets.
