Ferric maltol is a defined trivalent iron complex with three maltol ligands per iron, chemically iron(III) tris(maltolate) (CAS 33725-54-1; C18H15FeO9, MW 431.15), supplied under branded oral designations such as Feraccru and Accrufer. It carries about 13% elemental iron, a low load characteristic of an organic three-ligand complex rather than a simple salt such as ferrous sulfate or fumarate. The maltol ligand is produced synthetically. It is a red to reddish-brown powder, manufactured into capsules.
