Plant ferritin iron is iron held within the storage protein ferritin, sourced from plants such as pea or other legumes, rather than as a mineral salt or chelate, so it has no single CAS number, molecular formula or molecular weight. Because the iron sits inside a large protein shell, the elemental iron content of the ingredient is low and is standardised per specification. As a plant-derived material it is suitable for vegan formulations, which sets it apart from the animal-origin heme iron polypeptide in the family. It is a powder manufactured into capsules, tablets and powder blends.
