Acetyl-L-Carnitine Hydrochloride

[(2R)-2-acetyloxy-3-carboxypropyl]-trimethylazanium chloride

Acetyl-L-carnitine hydrochloride (CAS 5080-50-2) is the hydrochloride salt of the O-acetyl ester of L-carnitine, formula C9H18ClNO4 and molecular weight 239.70, corresponding to roughly 67% L-carnitine equivalent. It is produced synthetically as a non-hygroscopic raw-material grade, distinguishing it from the zwitterionic inner-salt acetyl form (ALCAR), which is supplied without a chloride counter-ion. The hydrochloride counter-ion lowers the L-carnitine content per unit mass relative to the inner-salt ester while giving a more moisture-stable crystalline powder. We manufacture it into capsules, tablets and powders.
