Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Dihydrolipoic Acid (DHLA)

6,8-disulfanyloctanoic acid (6,8-dimercaptooctanoic acid)

Dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) is the reduced, ring-opened form of lipoic acid, chemically 6,8-dimercaptooctanoic acid (CAS 462-20-4; C8H16O2S2, MW 208.34). It is produced synthetically by reductive opening of the 1,2-dithiolane ring, converting the closed oxidized disulfide into an open-chain molecule bearing two free thiol (-SH) groups. This addition of two hydrogens distinguishes it from the racemic, R- and sodium-salt grades, which all retain the intact oxidized ring, and accounts for its higher molecular weight of 208.34 versus 206.33 for the cyclic acids. Because the free dithiol is readily re-oxidized in air, it is an oxygen-sensitive liquid rather than a crystalline solid. We manufacture it in softgels and liquid formulations.
