Pyridoxine hydrochloride (CAS 58-56-0) is the hydrochloride salt of pyridoxine, the alcohol vitamer of vitamin B6, with the molecular formula C8H12ClNO3 and a molecular weight of 205.64. It is manufactured entirely by chemical synthesis and is the dominant, highest-volume commercial vitamin B6 raw material, produced to USP, EP and FCC grade at an assay of roughly 98 to 101 percent. Unlike the phosphorylated pyridoxal-5'-phosphate it carries no phosphate group, and unlike the pyridoxamine vitamer it is built on the hydroxymethyl (alcohol) structure rather than an aminomethyl group; adding one equivalent of hydrogen chloride raises its molecular weight above that of the unsalted free base (169.18), yielding a water-soluble crystalline powder.
