Betaine anhydrous, also known as trimethylglycine (TMG), is the water-free zwitterionic form of betaine (CAS 107-43-7; C5H11NO2, MW 117.15). It is derived from sugar beet, then isolated and purified to an anhydrous grade typically standardized to at least 98% trimethylglycine. As the free inner salt with no added acid counter-ion, it carries the highest betaine content per unit mass of the family and is near-neutral in solution, which sets it apart from the acidic hydrochloride and citrate salts. It is supplied as a crystalline, hygroscopic powder and is manufactured into capsules, tablets and powder blends.
