Quatrefolic is the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (CAS 1181972-37-1; C32H51N9O16; MW 817.80), a fourth-generation reduced folate carrying the same single (6S) methylfolate anion as Metafolin but paired with a glucosamine counter-ion instead of calcium. It is produced by chemical synthesis, and the glucosamine used is shellfish- and animal-free. The amine counter-ion gives it greater water solubility than the calcium methylfolate and folinate salts, and its much higher molecular weight (817.80) reflects the larger glucosamine ion relative to the other folate forms. Like Metafolin it is a reduced 5-methyltetrahydrofolate rather than the oxidized folic acid or the 5-formyl calcium folinate.
