Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol, lanolin)

Cholecalciferol; (3beta,5Z,7E)-9,10-secocholesta-5,7,10(19)-trien-3-ol

Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3, CAS 67-97-0, C27H44O, molecular weight 384.64) is a secosteroid of the 9,10-secocholesta-5,7,10(19)-triene series. This grade is manufactured by ultraviolet irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol recovered from sheep-wool lanolin, which makes it an animal-sourced, non-vegan material, in contrast to the chemically identical lichen-derived D3 and the fungal-sourced D2 (ergocalciferol) in this family. It is the unhydroxylated parent secosteroid, standardized in International Units (40 IU = 1 mcg), whereas calcifediol is its 25-hydroxylated metabolite and D2 carries an extra side-chain methyl group and double bond at a higher molecular weight. It is supplied as an oil dilution or as a dry beadlet or powder, and is manufactured into capsules, tablets, softgels, powders, gummies and liquids.
