Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2, CAS 50-14-6, C28H44O, molecular weight 396.65) is a secosteroid of the 9,10-secoergosta-5,7,10(19),22-tetraen-3-ol series. It is produced by ultraviolet irradiation of ergosterol obtained from yeast or fungi, a non-animal route that distinguishes it from lanolin-derived D3. Compared with the D3 forms (cholecalciferol, C27H44O, 384.64), the D2 molecule carries an additional side-chain methyl group and double bond and therefore a higher molecular weight, and unlike calcifediol it is an unhydroxylated form standardized in International Units (40 IU = 1 mcg). It is manufactured into capsules, tablets, softgels, powders and liquids.
