This cholecalciferol (vitamin D3, CAS 67-97-0, C27H44O, molecular weight 384.64) is molecularly identical to lanolin-derived D3 but is extracted from lichen, giving a non-animal, vegan-certified raw material. Because it is the same secosteroid as the lanolin grade, it is standardized on the same basis (40 IU = 1 mcg) and differs from that grade only in botanical origin rather than in chemistry. It is distinct from the family's D2 (ergocalciferol, C28H44O, 396.65), a higher-molecular-weight fungal secosteroid, and from calcifediol, the pre-hydroxylated 25-hydroxy metabolite. Supplied as an oil dilution or dry beadlet or powder, it is manufactured into capsules, tablets, softgels, powders, gummies and liquids.
