Se-Methyl-L-Selenocysteine

Se-methyl-L-selenocysteine

Se-Methyl-L-selenocysteine (CAS 26046-90-2, C4H9NO2Se, MW 182.09) is a defined monomethylated seleno-amino acid supplied as the single L-isomer; the same compound occurs naturally in plants such as garlic and broccoli, but the supplement ingredient is produced by chemical synthesis as a single pure compound. It carries roughly 43% selenium by weight and, like L-selenomethionine, is an organic amino acid rather than an inorganic salt, but it is a methylated selenocysteine derivative instead of the methionine analogue. Compared with selenium-enriched yeast it is a single chemically defined molecule rather than a mixture distributed through yeast protein, and compared with sodium selenite and sodium selenate its selenium is covalently bound in an amino acid rather than present as an oxidized salt anion. We supply it as a crystalline powder for capsules, tablets and powder blends.
