N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine (NALT) is the N-acetylated derivative of L-tyrosine, chemically (2S)-2-acetamido-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid (CAS 537-55-3, EC 208-671-3; C11H13NO4, MW 223.22). It is produced synthetically by acetylating the alpha-amino group of L-tyrosine, rather than being isolated as the fermentation-derived free base. The acetamido group makes it more water-soluble than free-base L-tyrosine, while the added acetyl mass lowers the tyrosine content per gram relative to the parent amino acid. It is supplied as a crystalline powder and manufactured into capsule, tablet and powder formats.
