Calcium Folinate (Leucovorin Calcium)

Calcium (6RS)-5-formyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolate

Calcium folinate is the calcium salt of (6RS)-5-formyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolic acid (CAS 1492-18-8; C20H21CaN7O7; MW 511.50), the reduced folate also known as folinic acid or leucovorin. It is manufactured synthetically and supplied to Ph. Eur./USP grade as the calcium salt in powder form. Chemically it differs from the two methylfolates by carrying a 5-formyl group in place of the 5-methyl substituent, and it is offered as the racemic (6RS) diastereomer mixture rather than a single (6S) isomer. It shares a calcium counter-ion with Metafolin but, like all three reduced forms, contrasts with the fully oxidized folic acid, and its molecular weight is the highest of the two calcium salts in the family. We manufacture it in capsules, tablets and powders.
