L-Leucine

(2S)-2-amino-4-methylpentanoic acid

L-Leucine is a branched-chain essential amino acid, chemically (2S)-2-amino-4-methylpentanoic acid (CAS 61-90-5), with molecular formula C6H13NO2 and a molecular weight of 131.17. It is produced by microbial fermentation and supplied as a free-form crystalline powder standardized to a typical assay of >=98.5% against USP, EP and FCC. It is a constitutional isomer of L-isoleucine, sharing the same molecular formula and molecular weight but differing in the position of the methyl branch and carrying a single stereocenter rather than isoleucine's two. It is one methylene unit larger than L-valine (C5H11NO2, 117.15), the smallest member of the family, and unlike the fixed-ratio 2:1:1, 4:1:1 and 8:1:1 blends it is a single defined amino acid with its own CAS number and formula. We manufacture it in powder, capsule and tablet formats.
