L-Valine

(2S)-2-amino-3-methylbutanoic acid

L-Valine is a branched-chain essential amino acid, chemically (2S)-2-amino-3-methylbutanoic acid (CAS 72-18-4), with molecular formula C5H11NO2 and a molecular weight of 117.15. It is produced by microbial fermentation and supplied as a free-form crystalline powder standardized to a typical assay of >=98.5% (USP/EP/FCC). It is the smallest of the three branched-chain amino acids, one methylene unit shorter than both L-leucine and L-isoleucine (each C6H13NO2, 131.17), which gives it a lower molecular weight. As a single defined amino acid it carries its own CAS number and formula, in contrast to the multi-constituent 2:1:1, 4:1:1 and 8:1:1 blends. We manufacture it in powder, capsule and tablet formats.
