Menadione (CAS 58-27-5) is synthetic vitamin K3, the bare 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone nucleus with no isoprenoid side chain, a provitamin form at a molecular weight of only 172.18 g/mol, the lowest in this family. It is manufactured by chemical synthesis and released at USP grade, typically at or above 98% assay by HPLC. It differs from K1 and the K2 menaquinones by lacking their lipophilic side chain entirely, and from its bisulfite derivative by being the fat-soluble free naphthoquinone rather than a water-soluble sulfonate adduct. The material is a powder, which is the only format we supply. It is traded mainly as a feed and premix ingredient.
