Natural Astaxanthin (Haematococcus)

(3S,3'S)-3,3'-dihydroxy-β,β-carotene-4,4'-dione

Natural astaxanthin is the xanthophyll carotenoid (3S,3'S)-3,3'-dihydroxy-β,β-carotene-4,4'-dione (CAS 472-61-7; C40H52O4; molecular weight 596.85), produced by the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is recovered from the algal biomass as an oleoresin and standardized to a stated total-astaxanthin percentage. In this natural material the pigment occurs predominantly as mono- and di-fatty-acid esters rather than as the free carotenoid, and it carries the single (3S,3'S) stereochemical configuration, which distinguishes it from the free, unesterified synthetic grade with its defined stereoisomer mixture, and from the single-species dipalmitate diester. It is a lipophilic material supplied as an oil-based oleoresin or as a water-dispersible beadlet. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules, powders and liquids.
