Betaine Citrate

2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid; 2-(trimethylazaniumyl)acetate (1:1)

Betaine citrate is the 1:1 salt of betaine with citric acid, also described as betaine dihydrogen citrate (CAS 17671-50-0; C11H19NO9, MW 309.27). It is produced synthetically by combining betaine with citric acid in equimolar proportion. Carrying the largest counter-ion of the three betaine forms, it has the highest molecular weight and the lowest betaine content per unit mass, and its citrate component makes it highly water-soluble and compatible with acid-based effervescent systems, in contrast to the anhydrous free base and the hydrochloride salt. It is supplied as a crystalline powder and is manufactured into tablets, including effervescent tablets, and powder blends, a format common in European over-the-counter products.
