Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Sodium R-Lipoate (Na-RALA)

sodium (R)-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate

Sodium R-lipoate (Na-RALA) is the sodium carboxylate salt of R-alpha-lipoic acid (CAS 176110-81-9; C8H13NaO2S2, MW 228.31), produced synthetically by neutralizing the R-enantiomer's carboxylic acid with sodium. Replacing the acidic proton with a sodium counterion yields a water-soluble powder and raises the molecular weight from 206.33 for the free acid to 228.31 for the salt. The oxidized 1,2-dithiolane ring is retained, so it differs from the free-acid R- and racemic grades chiefly in its salt form and aqueous solubility, and from dihydrolipoic acid in being the closed-ring oxidized species. It is supplied as an HPLC-assayed powder. We manufacture it in capsules and powders.
