Sorbitol Crystalline Powder

D-Sorbitol (D-glucitol)

Sorbitol Crystalline Powder is D-sorbitol (D-glucitol), a six-carbon polyol (sugar alcohol) with the molecular formula C6H14O6 (CAS 50-70-4, EC 200-061-5, molecular weight 182.17). It is manufactured by the catalytic hydrogenation of plant-derived glucose (dextrose) obtained from starch, then crystallised and milled to a free-flowing solid meeting USP/Ph.Eur./FCC grade at not less than 97% D-sorbitol on the dried basis. Unlike the family's 70% aqueous solution, this grade is the dried crystalline solid, delivering sorbitol at high concentration without the water carried by the syrup and behaving as a compressible filler-binder rather than a pourable liquid. It is supplied as a white crystalline powder and manufactured into the tablet, capsule and powder dosage formats, where it functions as a bulking agent, filler-binder and sweetener.
