Synthetic astaxanthin is 3,3'-dihydroxy-β,β-carotene-4,4'-dione (CAS 7542-45-2; C40H52O4; molecular weight 596.85), a carotenoid identical in backbone to the algal material but assembled by chemical synthesis. It is produced as the free, unesterified carotenoid and comprises a defined mixture of the (3S,3'S), meso and (3R,3'R) stereoisomers, in contrast to the single (3S,3'S) configuration and mixed fatty-acid esters of the Haematococcus grade. Because it is unesterified, its molecular weight is that of the base carotenoid rather than of a higher-mass diester such as the dipalmitate. It is supplied as an oil suspension or a stabilized beadlet. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules and powders.
